The Field Technician will work closely with state agency representatives to facilitate the installation, operation, repair, relocation, and maintenance of the Traffic Management Center’s field ITS devices (Intelligent Traffic System). These field ITS devices include, but are not limited to, portable variable message signs (VMS), post-mounted VMS, closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, roadway weather information systems (RWIS), and related sensors.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Device Operations, Monitoring, and Support by performing basic troubleshooting and support for ITS field devices, including VMS, CCTV cameras, RWIS, and sensors.
  • Monitor device status and provide daily updates on operational condition.
  • Assist with the configuration, deployment, and setup of ITS field devices.
  • Conduct field device, communications, and software maintenance, including reboots, diagnostics, and system restarts.
  • Preventative and Corrective Maintenance by perform routine and annual preventative maintenance (PM) on all ITS devices per the NYSDOT-established PM schedule, including inspection, cleaning, and battery maintenance or replacement.
  • Troubleshoot ITS communications/network failures and investigate equipment malfunctions. Tasks may include upgrading, replacing, configuring, installing, adjusting/reconfiguring, and repairing cabinet-level components.
  • Device Testing and Programming by conducting field testing of ITS devices to ensure functionality and communication integrity (e.g., VMS message display, CCTV image quality and positioning).
  • Deploy, configure, test, and program VMS units as needed to support TMC

What we are looking for:

  • 1 to 4 years of relevant work experience and/or an Associate’s Degree in Electronics, Engineering, Computer Science, or related field

  • Candidates should have the ability to read schematics and follow specifications to maintain or install and implement system components

  • A strong desire to learn and grow within the team, enjoy working on mechanical, electrical and IT equipment

  • Candidates should be aware that this role involves work that is outdoors and along the freeway. This role will also involve working on equipment located above the freeway

  • A valid and clean drivers license and clear background check

  • Experience performing routine preventative maintenance on cameras, dynamic messaging boards, radar detection systems, video detection systems, over height detection systems, demarcation, video wall, and network hub buildings
